Your hand must be empty for you to recall the weapon, you'll know its working cause you'll hear the sound the trident makes when it lands on a target. This mod should work with mods that add trident-like weapons. I've tested it with Simple Spears, Ice and Fire's tide trident and they all work fine. Couldn't get it to work with Alex's Caves extinction spear.
